Do we really need an App for that?

December 9, 2024

In today's digital age, web-based and app-based platforms have become essential aspects of our lives. These platforms have revolutionized the way we interact and conduct business, spanning from social networking to shopping and productivity tools. In this blog, we will explore the undeniable advantages of web-based platforms for the development of the parking industry, while comparing their functionality to app-based platforms.

App-based platforms, which are commonly referred to as "apps," are applications that we download on our phones and computers. However, these apps come with certain requirements, such as the need for storage space for installation and compatibility with the device. These specific characteristics can be detrimental to both the company and its users when it comes to parking technology or the industry as a whole.

But why does this negatively affect the customer, considering we are accustomed to the app system nowadays? Let’s explore some of the main reasons.

When arriving at a destination for the first time, users have to download the parking app before leaving the location, often requiring the use of their mobile data. For many people that can be inconvenient.

Another inconvenience caused by apps (which could be replaced by other alternatives) is related to storage. Nowadays, many people face storage issues with their smartphones. When a device reaches its maximum storage capacity, it becomes slower and restricts the user from taking pictures and videos, as well as downloading additional apps.

That being said, the main issue that app users have been reporting and complaining about is related to personal data collection and their constant connection to the internet. While web-based platforms won’t have access to your information, apps have the ability to track your location and store your data, causing a major concern related to the users’ privacy. With that, they could learn about your interests and possibly share your information with third-party sellers.

In order to provide the best solution possible for users, at Vend we decided on a different approach when launching our smart parking solution. Instead of developing an app, our Vend is built on a platform that resembles an app but is accessible online through internet browsers. This way, users won't have to download anything in order to use the platform, and their data will be safe since we don’t track anything users do outside of our platform.

To connect to our platform, drivers provide their phone number through one of our smart signs, and then the gate opens. Soon after, they receive a text message with a link that directs them to Vend's web platform.

Through this platform, users can easily view their parking fees, check their duration of parking, select a payment method through their phone, and much more. Once they register their preferred payment method, they no longer need to worry about anything when they return to the same location. Our ANPR (automatic number plate recognition) system automatically starts their parking session, and their preferred payment method is utilized when they approach the exit gate to leave. The solution is seamless, easy to use, and convenient for drivers.

With all of that being said, our goal at Vend is to enhance the driver, owner, and property experience. Our next improvement is to create our app-based platform for those drivers that prefer to have it downloaded as a native app. Through the app, the user will be able to give us direct feedback on the platform and help us improve even more the driver experience. This platform will be non-intrusive and will work just like the web-based one.
